MGT600 Management, People and Teams
This assessment requires you to explore and critically discuss the models, concepts, and theories presented in Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1 and their practical application through your experiences and observations by contributing to a group discussion and then submitting an individual critical discussion report.
Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.
1. Group Formation
At the beginning of the trimester, you will be placed in a group of 3-4 students by the Learning Facilitator. Your group will be a forum for sharing thoughts, experiences, and research in relation to the learning activities in the Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1.
Note: Although the Assessment 1 is an individual assessment, it is important to build relationships with your group members. This is because you will work with the same group for Assessment 2. Introduce yourself to your group with an introductory post.
It will also help to have a virtual meeting to get to know each other.
2. Complete Learning Activities in Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1
You are required to individually complete the following learning activities:
Module 1.1 Learning Activity 2: Environment Analysis and Actions for Managers
Module 1.2 Learning Activity 1: Comparing Operational Management and Project Management
Module 2.1 Learning Activity 1: Communication Styles
Each of these learning activities requires you to post responses (of 250 words) into the group discussion forum in Blackboard. You are also required to comment (using 100–200 words) on the posts made by fellow group members contributing to their discussion by sharing your practical experiences, observations, and research.
Please refer to Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1 Learning Activities section for more information about completing these learning activities.
3. Critical Discussion Report
You are required to submit an individually written critical discussion report of 750 words in MS Word (.doc or .docx) format, addressing the following questions:
• How are the topics covered in Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1 relevant to you?
• How did your perceptions and experiences differ from those of the other group members?
• What have you learnt and how will you apply this in the future? If you are currently working or have previous work experience, you may discuss how you would manage situations differently based on your learnings.
4. Report Structure
Please structure your report as follows:
• Cover sheet: With student details (student name, ID number, subject code & name, assessment number and title)
• Introduction: Outline the context, purpose, and structure of your report (5–10% of word count)
• Main discussion section: Answer each of the questions above (80–90% of word count)
• Conclusion: Provide a summary of the report (5–10% of word count)
• Reference list
• Appendices: Include a copy of your posts and replies to your group discussion activities
Please note that this is a short report with a word limit of 750. Therefore, it is important that you make use of tables, figures, and diagrams as these are not part of your word count.
5. You will be assessed against the assessment rubric below and your level of insight and application of knowledge from Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1.
You are strongly advised to read the rubric, which is an evaluation guide with criteria for grading your assignment—this will give you a clear picture of what a successful critical discussion report looks like.
Managing is a part of organizational culture which helps to contain routine tasks while achieving short and long-term goals. As per the MBA Assignment Expert, Different modules taught us varied concepts used by organizations, including project management and coping with changes. This individual report will explore concepts taught in modules 1.1, 1.2 and 2.1.
Modules 1.1 and 1.2 explored management contexts and key theories that cover project management. Module 1.1 majorly focused on functions and roles within the organization. It taught us that successful managers would efficiently understand their role and hence will take strategies for impacting both organizations and teams. Modules 1.2 has addressed project management as a skill and discipline that should be followed for solving many complex management situations. It has been observed that project management principles are aligned with various roles and disciplines of management. In this view, Module 2.2 covered communication as a core skill of a manager. Communication is very important for dealing with organizational changes that further assists in building, motivating, inspiring, and resolving conflicts. Relating practices with the models and frameworks will help individuals become efficient managers. The concepts covered in the modules are a vital part of management role and concepts, which also guides us in managing different situations. Hence, the learning will assist us in our future, which also justifies the relevance.
Management has been a part of my personality from a very young age. I follow the principle of unity and focus on aligning people with situational needs by resolving conflicts and applying effective communication skills and others. My perceptions were different from those of other members due to my personality traits and cultural factors. For example, some believe self-independence and autonomy help employees adopt working patterns as per their capability (Hurd, 2010). Although, my thoughts were that being actively involved with an employee helps solve their issues, builds relations and improves productivity. My experience working with different cultures and ethnicities during work in my professional and personal life has developed my perceptions of the same.
In a group discussion, many of us supported the idea of including project management principles within the routine roles and responsibilities of a manager. Although many of my classmates believed that the structure of project management procedures and functions is best suited to IT and construction jobs, embedding it within non-construction management might create issues.
Hurd (2010) mentioned that Agile methods have been popular in many management roles as it reduces the time consuming process of changes to be made. In addition, it helps the teams to develop the project more accurately due to their direct communication with clients.
Learnings that will benefit future management role
Modules 1.1 taught us that organizational environment and success are influenced by two factors that are internal and external. Hence, most factors falling under the internal or external environment will be considered in my future role. This will help validate my decision and hence ensure success for the organization. Also, changes are part of our life, whether personal or professional.
Organizations must align their business functions, products and customer services with changing external and internal environments. However, employees have already established working patterns; hence making changes might impact their productivity. Thereby, applying models and frameworks is very effective (Samson et al., 2020). Learning different change models will help me make any changes in my management role. The information helped me understand that applying change management is important and requires skills and knowledge. Thus, I have acquired many meaningful insights to assist me in my futuristic management role.
The discussions on project management also provided very meaningful insights. Hence the skills and knowledge required by the project manager will also be acquired by me. This will help me manage many small or big projects in my management role very efficiently. Project management is a very effective tool, for which I aim to improve my expertise to fulfil my responsibility efficiently.
The report has explored many aspects of management of people concepts. The module learning, learning activities, and discussions within the classroom have broadened my knowledge which will also impact my futuristic role as a manager. I have acquired many concepts like managing changes, project management principles, and nature type of organization, which has broadened my knowledge and skills. Hence, I will apply for my futuristic role.
