Using the first two of Daniel Goleman’s (2020) Emotional Intelligence (EI) domains of self- awareness and self-management, students are to write an EI Self-Reflective Essay. Students are to use a variety of EI development tools and strategies provided during classes (Weeks 1-4) to assist in their reflections.

Assessment Description

In Weeks 1-5, students studied Daniel Goleman’s (1985, 2020) four (4) components of Emotional Intelligence (EI): Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social-Awareness and Relationship Awareness. In this EI Self- Reflective Essay, students will demonstrate how, what they have learned in the first four weeks of the trimester, has improved their understanding of EI. In particular, students will need to explore self-awareness and self-management skills (Weeks 1-4). Students are to refer to the outcomes of a psychometric test and one other of the EI tools (you can choose from: mindfulness, journaling, gratitude, strength spotting or meditation app) to demonstrate their increased knowledge and understanding. Finally, students are to reflect on any implications of their increased EI in their future career as a professional.

LO1: Analyse the key features of emotional intelligence and cultural intelligence, as well as one’s own strengths and weaknesses in relation to EI / CI.

LO2: Apply the concepts of emotional and cultural intelligence to the modern workplace, and the implications for leadership, teams and for transforming organisational cultures.

In my quest for self-awareness (Goleman 2020), I have discovered that accepting my feelings is a deep process of self-discovery rather than just a cognitive act. It has been revolutionary to realise how emotions affect interpersonal dynamics and personal well-being. The EI test scores serve as tangible milestones in this journey, with a Self-Awareness score of 6. This numerical representation reflects the evolving grasp of emotional intelligence, a journey from acknowledgment to intentional utilization, shaping not only personal growth but also influencing professional interactions.

Recognizing and observing my feelings without judgment during mindful moments contributes to developing inner peace and resilience.

In tandem with awareness, writing has grown to be a treasured companion throughout this journey. Writing down my ideas and feelings is a therapeutic release that also gives me actual documentation of my emotional landscape (Pourazami 2022). This reflective process manifests a score of 7 in Self-Management, making it my guide towards self-regulation. Thinking back on this phase, I've realised that developing self-management abilities is a continuous process that requires integration and improvement. The techniques I learned about—mindfulness, and writing—have become essential to how I approach the complex problems I confront in my professional and private lives.

The growing self-awareness and refined self-management abilities that I developed in the first few weeks of my pregnancy will have a significant impact on my future professional life. Emotional intelligence (EI), according to Daniel Goleman, is a skill set that has real-world applications in the workplace rather than just being an academic endeavour.

Self-Awareness in the Professional Landscape:

My scores on the self-awareness test gave me some insights into the basic elements of emotional intelligence and how it manifests at work. My ability to keep my emotions under control is evident from the higher score for emotional stability which shows I am aware of self. The ability to understand and control emotions is an important factor at the workplace that influences proper decision making and team building (JAIN, JAIN & RASTOGI 2020. Openness to change is the other variable that has been increased to indicate flexibility, a critical component of self-awareness in any occupation. The realization that this element makes up my interpersonal style proves critical because it can affect how people relate to me at work. The outcomes of the self-management test unveil nuanced insights into my professional capabilities, pointing towards areas of strength and potential areas for development. A low score in rule-consciousness signals a tendency towards flexibility rather than rigid structure. While this trait can spur creativity and adaptability, it prompts an awareness of the need for intentional time and resource management to enhance overall effectiveness (Yusof & Zaini 2022). Conversely, a high score in social boldness reflects a confident and assertive approach in social scenarios. This attribute stands as a valuable asset in professional settings, facilitating relationship management and goal attainment. The ability to navigate social interactions with assurance contributes positively to leadership and collaborative endeavors.

The elevated score in perfectionism underscores a commitment to high standards, serving as a motivational force in goal achievement. However, it prompts a careful consideration of realistic expectations to mitigate potential stress and anxiety. Striking a balance between ambitious aspirations and pragmatic expectations is vital for fostering a healthy and sustainable approach to professional endeavors (de Oliveira, de Oliveira & Carrino 2023). In synthesizing these self-management insights, the professional landscape becomes a canvas for intentional growth. Leveraging social boldness, tempering perfectionism, and refining time management practices will contribute to a resilient and effective professional journey, marked by assertive leadership and holistic well-being.

Synthesis of Self-Awareness and Self-Management for Professional Success:

In summary, self-awareness and self-management knowledge combine to formulate a recipe for success. My journey towards self-awareness has enabled me to skillfully manage feelings and be flexible in interpersonal relationships. The strategic framework is also formed by the strengths and considerations identified from the self-Management test at the same time. They also act like catalysts – confident about social boldness, commitment to high standards, all balanced with an understanding that they too require a certain degree of structure. My synthesis shows that I am a results-oriented individual, emotionally intelligent, and I can develop good interpersonal relationship in order to succeed.

Exploring EI through the Goleman’s perspective has been transformative, it has provided deep understanding about self-aware and self-management.
