MBA401 People, Culture and Contemporary Leadership
Students will create an individual video presentation that will explore and analyse an organisation’s work-place culture. The organisation can be in Australia or elsewhere but it must be currently in existence. The analysis is to be undertaken having regard to the Model of Organisational Culture identified by Edgar Schein. As a guide, the presentation delivery should follow a Pecha Kucha style in terms of brevity and conciseness, but the assessment is not to be attempted as an actual Pecha Kucha presentation.
The presentation format for this assessment has restrictions:
• No more than 20 slides;
• No more than 10 minutes presentation duration in total;
• Students will be required to show themselves and be a visual part of the presentation.
In recent weeks students have explored a range of theories and practical examples regarding leadership, people, and organisational culture. For this video presentation, students will explore and analyse a contemporary organisation (of their own choice but drawn from a list of industries provided). Only industries on the list provided may be utilised as a base to consider an organisation to be explored for this assessment. The analysis of the organisation is to be undertaken having regard to the Model of Organisational Culture identified by Edgar Schein. The organisation should be in existence and presently trading.
The following should be explored and should be included in the video presentation:
• Summarise the current situation of the organisation in relation to its workplace culture using Schein’s Model to help guide your thinking
• What does a synthesis of your exploration of the three organisational levels of culture inform you?
• Include the present state of the external environment in relation to the organisation
• What aspects of the organisation’s culture are most exposed to external environment uncertainty?
• Based on your analysis, what course of action would you recommend that the organisation should take?
• What theories might you also use to help validate your suggestions?

The presentation will be assessed against the following criteria:
• Adherence to the timed presentation construct
• Level of analysis;
• Clarity of presentation structure;
• Clarity of presentation narrative;
• Evidence of research, appropriate sourcing and referencing (see here for further details);
• Evidence of a development of a body of knowledge in the field of the contemporary leadership and people
