Reflect on your journal entries to date and compare and contrast at least two of the methods of critical reflection that you have studied in Weeks 1 to 4. Explain why you chose these methods and identify the strengths of each method. If you have a preference of one over the others, explain why this is the case. Finally, you must explain how you have used the different methods to analyse the subject content, and how reflection has enabled you to think critically about your own life experience in the context of your culture. Please refer to the context and instructions section below for details on how to complete this task.
Critical Reflection in an important skill for counselling and community services professionals (Chenoweth & McAuliffe, 2021). You have been required to keep a journal that records your reflections on learning topics in each module. This assessment task tests your understanding and use of different methods of critical self-reflection using examples from your self-analysis in your reflective journal. This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your understanding of different methods of critical reflection and to consider why one might suit your particular style and cultural context better than others.
When completing this assessment task, bear the following points in mind:
• You are asked to use your journal entries as a basis for your writing.
• Your journalling has allowed you to experience reflective practice and to engage in the process of reflection. You must show evidence of these skills in the text that you produce.
• The assessment task allows you to demonstrate your understanding of theories of critical reflection and to consider why you may prefer to use a particular approach.
• You should include standard APA style citation and referencing in relation to the sources that you are comparing and discussing.
Critical reflection is highly important to excel in the profession of community development and counselling. It is important to always record experiences and learning in the form of a journal by using proper reflective models. In the following assignment, the reasons behind considering the DIEP model and 5Rs framework in my critical reflection process will be explained along with an elaboration on how this helped in the unit of lifespan development.
DIEP model
One of the major models for MBA assignment expert of critical reflection that was taught between week 1 to week 4 is the DIEP model of reflection. This model was proposed by Boud, Keogh and Walker in 1985 and highly emphasised future action and significance (Malone & MacMahon, 2024). The DIEP model has been used by me in this module to understand the subject content as this framework is systematic and clear. Through this, I was able to reflect on my experiences without avoiding important aspects. The DIEP model breaks down reflection into four distinct stages Description, Interpretation, evaluation and lastly planning (Malone & MacMahon, 2024). Through this, I was enabled to analyse my experiences in various ways which ensured a deeper understanding of the subject throughout the module. Apart from that, as each stage of the model proposes specific purposes, I was able to organise my thoughts logically. This also enabled me to think critically about my strengths and weaknesses to understand the subject content.
5 Rs framework
This framework was proposed by Bain et al in 2002 and incorporates five distinct stages such as reporting, reasoning, responding, relating, and reconstruction (UNCO, 2023). This model has also provided me with a structured approach to critically reflect on my experiences. The five stages not only helped me explore my emotions and responses throughout the course content along with enabling me to consider future actions effectively. One of the major strengths of this framework is that it enables the integration of theory efficiently (UNCO, 2023). In the ‘Relating’ stage, I was able to understand theories which I learned in this module such as Freud’s Instinct theory, Bowlby’s attachment theory, and many more. Moreover, in the ‘Reasoning’ stage I was able to understand factors and reasons effectively that can influence my actions. This has increased my expertise in applying theories effectively in real situations.
Consideration
From the above two models of critical reflection, I prefer to use the 5 Rs framework more often while analysing the subject content. Although both of the models ensure the incorporation of a comprehensive approach during reflection, the 5 Rs framework is more flexible. This model enables me to incorporate various aspects such as interpersonal dynamics and emotional responses. Thus, it increases my ability to rationally understand my overall experience of mine. Apart from that, unlike the DIEP model, the 5 Rs framework provides theoretical validation for reflection (Kazeni & McNaught, 2020). The ability to implement theory is highly important while studying in the course of lifespan development. Thus, I am very certain that this model will be helpful for me in the future also to reflect on my journey and in the identification of my strengths and weaknesses in the practice.
Reflection
The four aspects of the DIEP model have helped me to gain insights from the things that I have learned. The first aspect of the model has helped to find out the relevance of the subject in the development that can influence my behaviour and pattern of thinking. I have learned that human behaviour is significantly impacted by the changes taking place in its surroundings and impact the quality of life. This learning will further facilitate me to use the knowledge and skills in practical approaches to life.
Interpreting and evaluating will help me to understand the circumstances that have influenced human behaviour and to understand the significance of social and personal development to deal with the major events of life such as parent wood, job loss, divorce, death of family members and near ones. It also helped me adapt the activities that would provide me with better emotional, social, cognitive and biological development.
The 5Rs framework has helped me to reflect upon the experience I have gathered during my coursework. Critical thinking is the skills that facilitate avoiding all the limitations and addressing the connection that is written in the book with practical experiences. The different aspects of the 5Rs framework have helped me to reconstruct my experiences and to achieve the purpose of the framework. The 5 R's framework has helped to report the timing and to find out the development of the lifespan concerning 'what', 'when', and 'where'. The reporting section of the 5Rs model has provided all the factual insights and the involvement of the major aspects contributed significantly in the development of the lifespan.
The responding and relating aspects of the model have helped me with my views from the feelings, thoughts and observations I have gathered from the subject. It has helped to concentrate on the emotional aspects of human development and the factors in the surrounding areas that impact the life span and behaviour. This section has majorly focussed on the experiences that bring changes in human behaviour (McAuliffe, Boddy & Chenoweth, 2023). The Relating section has helped me to correlate my learning with my past experiences. The reasoning and the reconstructing section have helped me to understand all the instances related to logical reasoning and the impact of the opportunities and challenges in human life and the last aspect has helped me to reconstruct my future activities for better emotional and cognitive development.
From the above study, it can be concluded that Critical reflection helps to excel in community development. The Two models such as the DIEP model and the 5Rs framework help relate the learning of the study to practical life. The subject of lifespan development has taught us how people grow, how the behaviour of people changes with time and how the factors of society impact the major events of our lives. This model has helped in reflecting the learning of the subject and adapting the learning in the personal life for better social and emotional development.
