CWRI2016 Writing Genre Fiction Report

Detailed information on assessment tasks

The sketches, as outlined in class and refined in workshopping weeks, must demonstrate the function of the sketch as 'word-picture' or of imagery only, making sure to 'show, not tell.' Note that the genre or sub-genre you choose must be one of those set for discussion as a key topic for this unit.

Length: 600 words of sketches, plus 200 words of assessment reflection.

Please take note of the heading in the grading rubric for this assessment that describes the weighting placed upon your contribution to peer learning during the workshopping week prior to submission of this assessment. There will be two Turnitin submission points provided for this assessment in Blackboard. The first is a Revision (or DRAFT) submission point where you can submit your draft for this assessment. Only ONE draft submission is allowed, for which you will receive formative feedback from Turnitin in the form of an Originality report. Note in busy periods an Originality report may take Turnitin up to 24 hours to generate.

Late submissions to this point are NOT allowed. The assessment submitted here will NOT be marked. The second is a FINAL submission point where you can submit your final version of this assessment. ONE submission only is allowed, for which you will receive formative feedback from Turnitin in the form of an Originality report. Note in busy periods an Originality report may take Turnitin up to 24 hours to generate.

Late submissions to this point are allowed (and will be subject to penalties as per the Late Assessmentpolicy in this unit outline). The assessment submitted here will be marked.

2. Choose three genres from those discussed in this unit and write a short scene in each genre. It is not expected that each scene form a whole narrative. It is not expected that the scenes be connected to form a continuous narrative. The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your understanding of the generic conventions of your chosen genres.

Length: 3 x 400 word scenes = 1200 words, plus 200 word reflection.

Helen Brookker

The past traumas burden Helen because her youngest sister lost irreparably. While fighting the town’s criminals, Helen simultaneously faces her internal demons of the unresolved lack of her sister. Her quest for closure is a never-ending struggle. Michelle Harper

Michelle is a single mother who balances the demands of her job and the challenges of elevating a teenage son. He’s at the age at which rebellion begins and he checks the strict regulations he enforces at home. Their humble and simple home provides little personal touches that add warmth, not like the dreariness he encounters every day at work.

Each individual contributes particular elements of the genre for a story full of tension as well as ethical ambiguity, and mental depth. Helen brings up the theme of personal demons struggling with professional tasks along with her relentless search for truth and the past. Jon’s struggle for redemption and relapse adds a touch of conflict and uncertainty, showing the thin line between good and evil. Michelle who is an experienced detective brings the perspective of resilience and inner turmoil as well as focusing on the human cost of the pursuit of justice.

These characters effectively dive into the plot as well as have a deep emotional resonance which makes the story thrilling and compelling.
